Sports ActivitiesSkiing
Skiing is the coolest thing to do to beat the scorching desert heat. Dubai houses indoor skiing facilities with real snow and temperatures going in minus. There are two major skiing facilities in Dubai: Ski Dubai, located in the Mall of the Emirates, has the world’s largest indoor ski slope which is made up of 6000 tons of snow and measures 400 metres. Ski Dubai has the amazing capacity to accommodate 1500 guests at one time.Another place for a wonderful skiing experience is Dubai Sunny Mountain Ski Dome, built in Dubailand costing AED 1 billion. Bringing the Arctic winter experience to Dubailand, Dubai Sunny Mountain Ski Dome is the first facility of its kind in the Middle East. The place provides a great family attraction, featuring revolving ski slope, an artificial mountain range, an ice bridge, a cable lift, a snow maze, an ice slide, polar bears, cold water-aquaria and special sound and light effects. Boating
Dubai is proud to host the Class One World Offshore Championship powerboat races which take place between October and November. With free admission, there’s a lot of entertainment for children. Wooden boats of a slightly older vintage race under sail - up to 50 of them take part in a race and when they're lined up with their sails hoisted it's a spectacular sight.
Another boating event is the President's Cup Dubai-Muscat Sailing Regatta which is held in March every year. Starting from Dubai, it finishes off in Muscat at the Marina Bandar al-Rowdha.
Riding
Close to the heart of Arabic traditions is the camel race which is a major spectator sport across the UAE. Though not a delightful sight, pint-sized jockeys atop the race camels make them run faster while the frenzied owners of the camels keep track of their desert-ships in the comfort of their 4WDs driving around the inside of the track. Races take place early on Thursday and Friday mornings and on public holidays during winter and spring.
Swimming
Giving a lie to the dryness of its deserts, Dubai abounds in swimming facilities. Swimming pool is a must feature in all the new residential developments. Apartment buildings usually have a swimming pool and villas also hardly come without it. Nearly all the hotels and health and fitness clubs in Dubai feature a swimming pool as an essential element.
Besides swimming pools, there are numerous water theme parks in Dubai, the top of which is Wild Wadi. A part of the Jumeirah Beach Hotel complex, Wild Wadi is a paradise for kids and big kids alike. It features the terrifying 'Jumeirah Sceirah', which hurtles the foolhardy at speeds of up to 80kph. For nature-loving souls, the option of scuba diving is also available at various points in Dubai.
Watersports
Dubais boasts a variety of exhilarating watersports for the thrill-seekers. Jet-skiing is one of the most exciting watersports available in Dubai and is available at the Jumeirah Beach Hotel. Water-skiing is also available at most of the Jumeirah Beach hotels. For more fun and proximity to the natural marine life, scuba diving can be organized with Al-Boom Diving and others.
Golf
The amazing sight of expansive lush green gardens in the midst of the sand dunes of the desert seems to be an illusion. And the amazement doubles with the fact that Dubai is a golfers’ paradise and is home to some of the world’s top golf tournaments. One of the world's richest golf tournaments, Dubai Desert Classic, attracts some of the best golfers in the world. Currently held at the Emirates Golf Club, the four-day tournament is held annually in late February or March. Many golf-crazy expats take the week off to watch the world's best do the rounds of their local course - especially if celebrity-mad Dubai has managed to get Tiger Woods to turn up again.
Extreme sports
Motor sports are very popular with Emiratis and the Emirates Motor Sports Federation (EMSF) has a calendar of events throughout the year, with the important events being held in the cooler months. A round of the FIA Cross Country Rally World Cup, the UAE Desert Challenge, attracts top rally drivers from all over the world and is held in November, starting in Abu Dhabi and finishing in Dubai. The Dubai Autodrome, which opened in 2004, now has a pretty full calendar of events (as well as a sideline in dance parties), including a round of the A1GP series.
