Eating Out

Eating & Drinking
Dubai houses innumerable eateries and restaurants, both independent and linked with or situated inside the hotels. There are hundreds of independent restaurants and eateries in Dubai that offer finger-licking tasty foods. One drawback of independent eat-outs is that they are not allowed to serve alcohol. This is why some of the tourists prefer restaurants linked to a hotel because they serve alcohol in addition to their wide ranging menus. However, drinks are available at hefty mark-ups and a decent bottle of wine often costs as much as the main course.
Hygiene
Be it top range restaurants, a backstreet eatery, or a roadside shwarma shack, all food and drink outlets in Dubai are subject to regular and unrelenting hygiene check by the Municipality. No traces of grime are tolerated and grubby outlets are either warned to clean up or shut down. So no matter how hygiene conscious you are, you can confidently eat or drink at any place of your choice in Dubai.
Special Deals & Theme Nights
‘All you can eat and drink’ nights are one of the most popular deals in Dubai. At many bars and restaurants in Dubai, at least one evening of the week is dedicated to a special theme or promotion. There’s a variety of cuisines on the deal such as British Night, Seafood Night or Pasta Night. Friday Brunch deals are also popular in Dubai and you can enjoy multiple visits to a huge buffet for a set price. One of Dubai’s popular theme nights is Ladies Night in which there are some free drinks deals for ladies.
Extras
At some restaurants and eat-outs, rates written against the menu are not inclusive of the extra charges such as tax, service charges and tipping. These details are usually written in micro-sized font at the bottom of the menu card and may read as ‘prices are subject to 10% service charge and 10% Municipality tax’. In many hotel restaurants and bars, these charges are already included in the price, but at independent restaurants, may appear as additional charge on the bill. You may find the term ‘service charges’ incorrect as this sum is hardly ever passed on to the staff, and worse, you can’t withhold it even if you receive poor service. As for tipping, the standard is 10% of the total bill. But you have to make sure that the waiting staff gets to keep the reward because in many establishments the amount sadly goes directly to the till.
Veggie Food
Dubai can surely be called a heaven for vegetarians. Arabic food, although dominated by meat, also offers a vast range of vegetable dishes that are both healthy and tasty. Due to a large number of Indian expats who are vegetarians by religion, Dubai has numerous Indian restaurants that offer delicious veggie food. One doesn’t have to be a hardcore vegetarian (or an animal’s rights activist ;-)) to enjoy the vegetarian food in Dubai – even non-veggies love its unique taste and are seen swarming into vegetarian restaurants. Moreover, there are many Italian and Spanish restaurants in Dubai that have delectable veggie dishes on their menu.
