Oud Metha Umm Hurair

Oud Metha is centrally located, with easy access to the highways. There are number of shops and restaurants placed at walking distance or just at few minutes’ drive. Lamcy Plaza and the Wafi City complex are also nearby. Housing is mainly consisted of four-storey apartment blocks but not heavily packed as in as in other ‘inner-city’areas. The new construction is underway but at present accommodation is not easy to find.
Where to stay
The area is full with apartments usually in four-storey buildings. The sizes of apartments range from studio to three-bedroom. The rent ranges from Dhs.75,000 to Dhs.90,000 per year for a one bedroom, Dhs.90,000 to Dhs.120,000 for a two bedroom and around Dhs.130,000 for a three bedroom.
Where to shop
This area is full with all shops, including a large Lals supermarket inside Lamcy Plaza on the top floor, and number of medium-sized supermarkets, smaller groceries, pharmacies and a Spinneys Market in the area. There are several dry cleaners and laundries scattered through the area as well as some good video rental stores and a post office in Lamcy Plaza. ATMs of several banks can be found in Lamcy Plaza and Wafi City along with branches of some of the banks in the area including National Bank of Dubai near Movenpick Hotel. Several churches are also located in the area.
Fun & Leisure
There are some great independent restaurants in the area around Lamcy Plaza, like Lemongrass and Lan Kwai Fong, and there are licensed restaurants in Movenpick, Grand Hyatt and the Wafi complex. Cheaper choices include the foodcourt in Lamcy with some branches of local chains and the big fast food names, and there are several local shawarma joints around Oud Metha. For bars and nightclubs there is the low key, fun-packed Jimmy Dix in the Movenpick, and The Mix at the Grand Hyatt, one of Dubai’s superclubs.

There are number of health spas, Moroccan baths, hairdressers and beauty salons located in this area are as well as several social clubs. For sports lover there is Al Nasr Leisureland,the health clubs at Movenpick, Grand Hyatt and Wafi, many small gyms located around, and billiard halls.

Creekside Park and Zabeel Park are both just five minutes away and a small park is located on Umm Hurair Road near the Dubai TV. Couple with these, there are amusement centres at Al Nasr Leisureland, Lamcy Plaza and Wafi City, Children’s City at Creekside Park and the 12 screen Grand Cineplex cinema next to the Grand Hyatt. Streetside shisha cafes are popular among residents and also draw plenty of people to the area.
Hospitals and Clinics
Two main government hospitals, Rashid and Al WasI, are nearby, there are also many popular private medical centres such as American Hospital, the Canadian Specialist Medical Centre and the newly opened Health Care City.
Where to Study
Some of Dubai largest schools are locate on the main street between Oud Metha and Umm Hurair such as the Indian High School and Dubai English Speaking School, a popular school for western children living all over Dubai.
Traffic & Parking
The traffic is a bit problematic but there are various alternative access routes. The main problematic area is around Lamcy Plaza and through the main roundabout in Umm Hurair coming from the Wafi interchange. The area has ample free parking, in shopping centre carparks, on side roads, and on empty patches of sandy ground. In peak housr Sheikh Zayed Road suffers the usual problems towards Garhoud Bridge and Sharjah and towards Media City, However Maktoum Bridge is a viable alternative to Garhoud.
Safety & Annoyances
There can be some noise from cars driving around at night on weekends, but police presence normally addresses the problem.
