Deira

Horrendous traffic and general congestion makes Deira not a popular residential area among the expats in higher income brackets. The centre of Deira is consisted of old apartment blocks and hardly any open spaces or public greenery. Near the creek there are several new buildings having modern upmarket apartments, most of them have spectacular views across the creek.
Where to Stay
Villas of Deira are almost exclusively inhabited by locals. The areas closer to the creek are full of apartments where most of the expats live. In central Deira, the rent is around Dhs 45,000 for a studio apartment and Dhs 75,000 for two bedrooms apartment. The creek side area just north of Makhtoum bridge has a great standard of housing and is used by professional expats of all nationalities. The rent of executive apartments, with great views over the creek, impressive landscaping and good facilities, is around Dhs. 95,000 and a one bedroom, furnished, serviced apartment cost you around Dhs 18,000 per month.
Where to Shop
Deira is full with popular malls like Al; Ghurair City Reef Mall and Deira City Centre. All malls have good supermarkets (Spinneys, Al Maya, and Carrefour respectively) couple with other shops. There are also number of smaller groceries, pharmacies, dry- cleaners and laundry services on most of the streets. Deira’s main post office is near the Al Ghurair Centre and there are several banks on Al Makhtoum Road.
Fun & Leisure
There’s a good choice of hotels, like the Intercontinental, Hilton and Sheraton Creek the JW Marriott, Renaissance, traders, and Metropolitan Palace, all of which present a great choice of dining outlets, bars and nightclubs.

For affordable eats, AL Rigga Street has number of independent restaurants along with some fast food places, and the Al Ghurair Centre has some particularly nice cafes on the terrace. There are some nice walking areas by the creek and along the cornice towards Mamzar Park.
Hospitals and Clinics
Dubai Hospital near the cornice provides local healthcare, Dubai’s leading emergency hospital is just across Maktoum Bridge in Umm Hurair. There is also the choice of numerous small private medical clinics.
Where to Study
Not so many recognized expats schools are located in Deira –the area is dominated by singletons looking for a city residence rather than people with kids looking for a family home
Traffic and Parking
The traffic is dreadfully congested even getting from A to b within Deira itself can be challenging. Taxis are popular because parking is difficult.
Safety and Annoyances
The main nuisance is the traffic. Relatively it is a safe place to live.
